Sen. Rand Paul Vows to Filibuster Pompeo, Haspel

by Countable | Updated on 3.19.18

What’s the story?

Last week, President Donald Trump tweeted:

Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky said on CNN’s "State of the Union" Sunday that he’ll “do whatever it takes, and that includes filibuster” to oppose Pompeo and Haspel.

Why does Paul oppose Pompeo?

  • Paul said the current-CIA director is too hawkish, and doesn’t believe he’d be a "good fit" for the nation’s top diplomatic post.

  • "I don’t think you really want people who are eager for war to be running the State Department. You want a diplomat," Paul said, adding:

"I frankly think that Pompeo’s positions are too much of an advocate for regime change, really everywhere. I don’t think our policy ought to be for regime change, so I think Pompeo really isn’t a good fit to be a diplomat."

What’s Paul’s issue with Haspel?

  • Haspel reportedly oversaw torture at a CIA "black site" in Thailand. “Some details may be disputed,” Paul wrote in an op-ed in Politico, “but it remains true that Haspel ran a secret center in Thailand where prisoners were tortured.”

  • There are also multiple accounts discussing Haspel’s involvement in destroying video evidence of the torture program. "Think about that for a moment," Paul wrote. “She helped destroy the very evidence of this program, and people tell us we have no reason for concern?”

  • "What America stands for is not torture," Paul told CNN. “Torture is the hallmark of totalitarianism."

What do you think?

While ordinarily disagreeing with Rand Paul about everything, bravo in this case! To my elected representatives, please do everything in your power to prevent both torture advocates from further destroying American credibility, ethics, and standing internationally. As a retired therapist, I know that torture yields no useful information whatsoever, is barbaric, evil, and absolutely unnecessary. Acting out sick sadistic impulses helps no one. To place inappropriate, unqualified, unethical people in positions of power is fool hearty at the least. The GOP has deteriorated and will pay a price for throwing The American people under the bus. Get the impaired dictator wannabe out!

Senator Rand Paul is absolutely right. We need a diplomat in the post of Secretary of State, not a hawk. Especially with the upcoming historic negotiations with North Korea. In addition, only in the dystopian Trump universe would we be considering putting in charge of the CIA someone known to have condoned and even participated in covering up torture techniques used during the Bush years. Please do all you can to oppose both appointments!

There should be great concern about these two appointments. Congress should spend time questioning these people and their motives..

Please oppose the appointment of Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State. He is a partisan war hawk who will make decisions based on party instead of national security. We need someone who sees the greater good of the Iran Nuclear deal in stabilizing a volatile region. More importantly, we need someone who will stand up to Russian influence, not quietly acknowledge its existence without condemning election meddling out of fear of annoying his boss.

I have a difficult time reconciling in my mind, the "chief spy" becoming the "chief diplomat". How could anyone negotiating w/him trust him? Filibuster away Sen. Paul.

We can do better...what is right & good for our Country. As a rule, do not trust Trump’s choice for these all important Offices: Secretary of State & CIA Director.

We need more people in government like Rand Paul. While he doesn’t get it right 100% of the time, his push for liberty of tyranny is something that democrats, republicans, libertarians, and independents should be able to get behind. His ability to work with anyone where principles align is something sorely missed in our government today.

GOP leaders no longer back up their words with actions. When Donald J Trump moves to cross a proverbial line in the sand, such as the firing of Comey or McCabe the GOP leadership collectively furrow their brows and say such things are inappropriate and cannot be tolerated. They claim to defend Robert Mueller’s investigation, and they claim they care about election interference and the sanctions on Russia that the administration refuses to enforce. And yet, despite all of the furrowing of brows, and words of concern, they have done nothing but push their political agenda. The United States of America is under attack, and the GOP has done nothing. These are not the actions of patriots.

With Senator Paul opposed, Democrats need to do everything they can to block the president's obviously unqualified choices for these posts. Better to leave them unfilled.

To Senators Burr and Tillson: I fully agree with Sen Paul’s assessment and am in complete support of his filibustering if necessary to prevent these two from being confirmed. Why would a war hawk be named to the chief diplomatic post? And why is a known torturer named as head of the CIA? I’m afraid. You are our check and balance on the Executive branch...do your job for the people of North Carolina. Please!

Usually Paul is NOT someone I agree with, but on this I agree completely. Neither of them should be in this Toddler Trump’s cabinet. Pompeo is from Kansas and WE WERE GLAD TO GET RID OF HIS HAWKISH BEHAVIOR. Little did we know he would end up with Trump. He’s smarter & more knowledgeable than Trump, but he’s not who we want in the cabinet at all.

I don’t often agree with Rand Paul, but in this case he is right on the money. These two people should never have been in their current positions, and they should certainly never be confirmed for the ones the pig occupying the White House wants to move them into. Senate: find a shred of integrity and just say no!

I don’t agree much with the position taken by Senator Paul however in this case he is absolutely correct. Pompeo was not a good choice for CIA Director and a worse choice for Department of State. It is clear that representatives of DOS have no means of representation of the U.S. in matters of bilateral relations and much less with a chaotic foreign policy advocated by this Administration. It is time to place a professional in charge and force the President to work with Congress on serious nominations for these posts.
