At 8:44 AM President Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson via tweet, and announced his intention to nominate current CIA Director Mike Pompeo in his stead:
Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 13, 2018
Though reports circulated almost immediately that the president’s issues with the Secretary have been developing for some time, fairly quickly it came to light via State Department spokespeople that Tillerson was unaware in advance of the move and only found out about his firing by seeing the president’s tweet:

Secretary Tillerson is currently in Africa on behalf of the administration.
What’s your opinion on how or why Tillerson was fired? Do you think Mike Pompeo will be a good replacement or not?

Classy way to fire someone. Tillerson should consider himself lucky. Hope he tells us what really goes on in that disgrace of a White House.
When considering the Federal department and the Heads of various departments, I feel we are the laughing stock of the world right now. The United States is beginning to seem like the old Republic of Vietnam government when President Johnson remarked there were five changes to the Presidency and cabinet before he was able to meet the president of the Republic in his first week after the Kennedy assassination. The United States looks like the old Roman Empire currently with these rapid changes and new faces. I challenge President Trump, whether re-elected or not, to keep a stable cabinet for more than one year. I was no fan of President Obama’s policies, but I concede his cabinet was a well functioning team.
Trump should hang a “help wanted sign” on the Whitehouse lawn. Hopefully one day our representative will grow a set and send President Trump tweet.
More Drama from our “Stable Genius”. I guess the Russian Heat was getting a little too close to the White House lawn...time to start burying the obvious bodies in a sadly ignorant attempt at a simple smokescreen. Wake up Folks!!!
You do not fire someone by tweet!!! Especially they are out of the country on government business. This is irresponsible, baby behavior.
Told ya he was a coward!!
This administration has us on the brink of war, so let’s send a tweet and dismiss the one sane guy that’s trying to put out the fires....Incredible!
I don’t think 45 liked having any of the spotlight taken away from him, which Tillerson inadvertently did by disagreeing with him on certain points. Along with the fact that 45 values loyalty in an authoritarian way.
The fact that 45 did this via twitter was classless enough because it should be face-to-face. One is supposed to pledge loyalty to a country, not the President.
The fact that President Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and announced his intention to nominate current CIA Director Mike Pompeo in his stead was and is his prerogative. However doing it via the tweeting is, in my opinion, a poor method of firing people. It should be via a Face to Face process. 3-13-18.
Comrade Bone Spurs lacks integrity. Wouldn't it be nice if we could send out a tweet telling him he's fired. HE'S SUCH A DIRTBAG AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR MR. MUELLER TO FIND HIM GUILTY OF MORE THAN JUST COLLUSION. HE AND HIS FAMILY/STAFF ARE USELESS, GREED DRIVEN LOSERS. IMPEACHMENT IS TOO GOOD FOR HIM, IMPRISONMENT IS WHAT HE DESERVES.
We are definitely in the Twilight Zone, fired via tweet AND replaced by a WAR HAWK. djt said he made the decision without consulting his advisors. God help us all.
45 is such a classless ass. Of course he would fire somebody by tweet. Coward! And after Tillerson did his best to empty the State Department of all those with any experience and sense. I guess if one speaks out against Putin one is apt to be fired by Putin’s punk, 45. We are the laughing stock of the world. GOP, grow a spine. Impeach 45!
What kind of person fires the Secretary of State with a tweet? Perhaps a coward? Can you imagine acting like this? Who does such bizarre behavior? Only one living person-Trump!
Fired by a tweet??? Our Secretary of State! You have got to be kidding me!! If any one of our elected representatives continues to support this dangerous and reckless President, they will be replaced in November! This is totally unacceptable!
Wonder if the White House will bring him back from Africa? Trump will likely make him hitchhike. 😡
Not a surprise that Trump fired Tillerson by tweet, a bully is ALWAYS a coward. Now, Trump wants Pompeo as Sec. of State (someone who holds daily "prayer" meetings) and a woman who had no problem overseeing waterboarding in the past...Trump said, he wants to bring that back...just yet another checkmark in the "How to be Dictator" handbook. Anyone who is not further alarmed by this, is not paying attention.
Former Exxon Mobil millionaire Rex Tillerson’s appointment as Secretary of State was questionable from the onset due to his lack of qualifications. Just because he travelled to many countries does not mean he was qualified to conduct foreign policy. If that were the case, then I should be hired the president of a bank because I’m a frequent user of an ATM! Former FBI Director Comey stated to the Senate that #45 expected an oath of loyalty from those working for him. After Tillerson’s #45 is a ‘moron’ comment, it appears that statement is true.
So dishonorable but so trumpian to fire by tweet. Does this mean the department of foreign affairs is now unstaffed completely?
Scares me to death. Rex Tillerson was a horrible Sec of State, but at least he tried. Pompeo doesn’t know anything about global affairs & is only a “yes” man. Kansas was glad to get rid of him. Should have known Trump would go bonkers when he agreed with UK about the Russian poisoning.
