Senate Committee to Take Up Election Interference, Anti-Lynching Bills

by Countable | 10.10.18

The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing on Thursday to advance bills to deter interference in U.S. elections by foreign nationals and make lynching a federal crime, along with nine appeals court judges.

Here’s a look at the two bills:

S. 2785 - Defending Elections against Trolls from Enemy Regimes (DETER) Act: Sponsored by Sens. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), this bill would make foreign nationals who have engaged in, or intend to engage in, improper interference in a U.S. election inadmissible. It’d define “improper interference” as conduct that:

  • Violates federal criminal, voting rights, or campaign finance law, or is under the direction of a foreign government; or
  • Interferes with any general or primary federal, state, or local election or caucus, including a candidate’s campaign or a ballot measure.

S. 3178 - Justice for Victims of Lynching Act of 2018: Sponsored by Sens. Kamala Harris (D-CA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Tim Scott (R-SC) ― this bill would make lynching a federal crime that automatically warrants an enhanced sentence under existing federal hate crime statutes punishable by up to life imprisonment. It wouldn’t preclude a murder charge from being filed on top of the lynching charge.

The committee will also consider the nominations of eight district court judges and one circuit court judge in the hearing, which begins at 10am ET.

Tell your senators how they should vote on these bills and nominations if they reach the floor (or in the hearing if they’re on the committee)! Share your thoughts below!

It’s a good start but what ramifications do the campaigns and candidates face as punishment? Can we enforce treason for once in this country!! Also maybe add in that all Campaigns should be publicly funded, lobbying should be illegal, candidates need to release they’re tax returns from 10 years prior to running and until death, and get rid of the electoral college while we’re at it!! Until then no politician will truly be for and by the people!!

    Both should have bipartisan support.

Anti-lynching laws? Seriously? Isn’t murder already illegal ENOUGH? You’ve got time to waste on THIS idiocy? And for election security, GO TO PAPER BALLOTS AND FORGET ABOUT ELECTRONIC VOTING!! Is this issue really THAT hard to understand?

I support the anti-interference bill but would like to actually see enforcement of current laws where only US CITIZENS are able vote and that of those they only get to vote once AND that they must provide identification that guarantees that the person voting is who they purport to be. Funny how we don’t want Russia to interfere but its OK to have more voters vote in an election than are registered in the district. Where’s the outrage about the democrats. Time to stop the hypocrisy!

I support a Committee to seek out and eliminate election interference. However, those who subvert free and fair elections should be found treasonist and thus a candidate for lynching.

This is great! We need to eliminate the threats from the other countries, not just Russia.

In the wake of the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, anti-lynching laws need to be shored up, the Democrats be damned!

Anti-lynching? This is 2018 not 1800! Are the laws from the 1700s & 1800s STILL on the rolls? Still fallowing those OLD OUTDATED LAWS? NO WONDER WE ARE SO BACKWARDS!

You mean to tell me “Lynching” was not already considered a Federal crime? “Reconstruction”-still not complete either. Get Trump to Voice-out loud, his support to stop all Election interference including Cybercrime. Most important, he needs to mention Putin’s involvement in the Election interference especially.

The GOP will find an excuse to kill the anti-lynching bill.

Anti-lynching laws are being used against protesters, we already have hate crime bills and murder(unless you are a cop) is against the law anyway.

I fully support any actions to prevent interference in our elections. In fact, aiding in this should be considered treasonous and punishable with severe consequences.

Anyone that would vote against making lynching a federal crime, even under the states right excuse is basically condoning this hideous act of evil.

Election interference by illegal aliens is a problem. Look at how many the California DMV “accidentally” signed up to vote.

Please support the Justice for Lynching Victims Act. It is imperative that the government deters potential white supremacists from lynching people.
