house Bill H.R. 3008

Studying the Feasibility of Making George W. Bush’s Childhood Home Part of the National Park Service

Argument in favor

The childhood home of George W. Bush is just as historically significant as many other former presidents’ childhood homes, and there should be an assessment of its suitability for incorporation as a unit of the National Park Service.

With the loss of the Patriarch of the Bush family and Former President of the US this is a given...countless former presidents childhood homes have already been classified this way and President Bush’s house should be no different.

Argument opposed

The National Park Service should be looking to offload responsibility for the management of the childhood homes of former presidents, rather than considering taking on additional units.

That’s ridiculous!!! While the EPA is destroying precious air, water & land our stupid Elected Officials are going to steal more money to fund the already rich Bush family legacy home a shrine!!!! What a joke! Flint Michigan can’t drink their water yet! Fracking water is being dumped in the Gulf of Mexico, fracking is going on all over only to have earth quakes where they’ve never been before. But George Bush’s home should me memorialized my god!!! El Trumpo is a saint

Eisenhower’s house in Denison TX belongs to Texas as a historical site. So should the Bush house. Let the State of Texas deal with it if they want to memorialize their former presidents residences.

What is House Bill H.R. 3008?

This bill would direct the Dept. of the Interior to conduct a special resource study into the feasibility and costs of designating the 1,400 square foot George W. Bush Childhood Home — located at 1412 West Ohio Avenue, Midland, Texas — as a unit of the National Park Service. The study would be completed within three years and provided to congressional natural resources committees.

The National Park Service and private organizations have preserved the childhood homes of many former presidents to serve as historical repositories for documents and artifacts from their presidencies. The Bush Childhood Home is currently operated by a non-profit and is open to the public.

Impact

The George W. Bush Childhood Home; the National Park Service; and Congress.

Cost of House Bill H.R. 3008

The CBO estimates that enacting this bill would cost less than $500,000.

More Information

In-DepthRep. Mike Conaway (R-TX) introduced this bill to preserve the Midland, Texas home of the Bush family as part of the National Park Service like other former president’s childhood homes:

“George W. Bush’s childhood home is a historic property that tells a tale of two presidents, two governors, and a first lady. The home is currently a museum that is open to the public, and my legislation takes the next step towards the home achieving the status of a national historic landmark. It’s important that we preserve this significant piece of history to ensure that future generations will have the same opportunity to get a glimpse into the lives of the members of the Bush family.”

This legislation passed the House Natural Resources Committee by unanimous consent and has the support of six cosponsors, all of whom are Texas Republicans.

Get your act together and get some meaningful votes on the floor. Fund that damn wall. Cut the crap with the busywork. Do you actually think we don’t see through this charade? You are not “leaders”, you are “representatives”. Let’s get that straight. We know what you’re doing. You’re falling down on the football trying to run out the clock on this Congress so next year you can point to the Democrats and say “hey they wouldn’t let me”.... But that doesn’t wash any more guys.

Until every citizen of this country is able to have food on the table, a roof over their head, and access to adequate affordable health care on a daily basis, there is no excuse for spending a single taxpayer dollar on ridiculously unnecessary, superfluous stuff like this. The person(s) who introduced this legislation ought to be reprimanded and recalled

Utah Republican Chris Stewart is fine with destroying and diminishing our own National Parks in Utah, handing them to oil, gas, uranium extractors - AND then votes in favor of building a federal shrine in Texas to another oil baron.

No! No! No! What a waste of Federal taxpayers money. Federal taxpayers should not be required to fund this project. If the State of Texas taxpayers want to provide funds to support the rich, good for them.

How about we spend our money saving our current national parks from this administration and their insistence on selling our lands to corrupt corporations to destroy for their personal profit. I think we’re getting ahead of ourselves in the deification of G.W. He had a dark side that’s is being overlooked now in ‘our’ grief. Besides, the Bush family is certainly wealthy enough to donate that land to the state as a museum peace if they really wanted to pay eulogy to their patriarch and not just profit from his passing.

The US is WAY too far in debt to spend money on something not so important. Education should be TOP priority for the US. From education comes wisdom, compassion, strength and wealth. Let’s go for that!
