President Donald Trump nominated Indiana health official Jerome Adams to the post of Surgeon General. The Senate will likely take up his confirmation before the August recess.
But who is Jerome Adams?
Jerome Adams is currently the Indiana State Health Commissioner. He is a board-certified anesthesiologist, as well as carrying a degree in public health.
Adams grew up in Mechanicsville, MD and received a BS in Biochemistry and a BA in biopsychology from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He went on to attend medical school at Indiana University. He also completed a Masters in Public Health at the University of California at Berkeley, with a focus on chronic disease prevention.
Adams is also an assistant professor of anesthesiology at Indiana University Health, and cares for patients at Eskenazi Health, Indianapolis’s publicly funded hospital.
Adams was appointed to the position of Indiana State Health Commissioner in October of 2014 by then-Governor Mike Pence. He is credited with combatting a serious H.I.V. outbreak in a rural part of the state that was experiencing a rash of injection drug use shortly after taking up his post. Adams advocated for and instituted a needle exchange program to stem the outbreak.
Adams is a staunch supporter of "harm reduction" techniques, like needle exchanges, as a gateway to health services and treatment. He told the New York Times:
"It’s only going to work if it allows us to connect people to the resources they need to get clean, to get off drugs and get their infectious diseases appropriately diagnosed and treated."
If confirmed, Adams is expected to be a strong advocate in the fight against the opioid epidemic. Both Republicans and Democrats see him as an excellent choice, similar to former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, who held the position through much of the 1980’s. Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein, who worked at the Food and Drug Administration under the Obama administration and now teaches public health at Johns Hopkins University, speaks of Adams highly:
"From everything I’ve seen, Dr. Adams is a very serious and capable physician and public health official. This is an opportunity to speak to the problems as they are and not as they are viewed through an ideological prism."
Who is the Surgeon General?
The Surgeon General of the United States is the lead spokesperson for the federal government’s public health efforts. The Surgeon General is the operational head of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, the federal uniformed service of the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS). The mission of the PHS is "protecting, promoting, and advancing the health and safety of the Nation."
The Surgeon General holds the position of Vice Admiral in the Corps and answers directly to the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Finally a qualified appointee. So far he sounds like a good choice with a diverse background and solid education. Dare I dream this is an accurate portrayal of his skills and philosophy of medicine? I think I will take the ray of hope he seems to offer.
This is a pleasant surprise, sounds like a solid candidate for the position and has a nice track record and experience to help address America's growing opioid problem. Well done, make this one of many steps in the right direction.
On the surface, this looks great. Please ensure this isn't one of Trumps "anti-everything-Obama" selections. A track record and actual knowledge about the topic would be a breath of fresh air.
Dr. Adams is a strong choice in regard to the opioid epidemic and the much needed harm reduction approaches. However, I strongly urge my Senators to confirm that Dr. Adam does not share beliefs about contraception and other women's health issues with Vice President Mike Pence before voting for his confirmation. As Surgeon General, he must advocate for the best medical options for people, which Includes a range of health services.
We're going to have a Surgeon General? Really? After so many years? Maybe he can examine Trump and figure out what's wrong with him!
Anyone Trump nominates for any position is suspect because Trump himself is not of sound mind! We might be better off not filling some positions that are nominated by Trump. Please spend more time speaking with your Republican colleagues about their refusal to take action against Trump! How long are we going to let our Constitution and country burn??? Every day Trump is in office, we stand to lose rights! Immigration rights, voting rights, privacy rights, rights to a free press, and many other rights are under attack by Trump! Time is running out, impeachment or 25th amendment process is needed now!
Looks like another mistake. This looks like a good choice.
Sounds like a grounded individual with common sense and experience. I support and encourage my representatives to endorse unless new information is gained that indicates he is not a wise choice.
It's July, it's 6 months since Inauguration Day. What is the hold up on filling these positions? This Executive Office must step up, refrain from social commentary and get to work filling these necessary roles. Then pass or fail them through the process. As educated and informed as this candidate is, he will answer to HHS Secretary Price, where all roads lead back to Mr Trump.
He sounds like a good choice, his recommendation of needle exchange it to stop the spread of disease. Drug addiction and needle sharing has always been a major problem in the spread of the most dangerous diseases. Hopefully he will be a an influence to help end many of our health problems.
Dr. Adams sounds too good to be true! I am concerned about the Winston cigarettes over the opioid text. I flashed on his saying that the relationship between nicotine and COPD, cancer and emphysema needs further study. I just start twitching every time this administration nominates anyone. I hope that the Senate committee does not get so excited that they forget to ask the hard questions.
This must be a mistake, a Surgeon General with healthcare experience? I feel like I'm dreaming. Best of luck to you sir! 👨⚕️🤗
This physician seems to be very well qualified to be Surgeon General. His education and experience in public health is impressive. His fight against opioid related problems such as HIV, hepatitis and sepsis is sound. Believe he will be an asset.
Wow...excellent educational background and sounds like he is reality based. Dare I hope?
Isn't the main reason Indiana had an HIV outbreak because they closed all those unnecessary and morally bankrupt Planned Parenthood centers?
I see x governor Mike Pence is bring along some qualified individuals.
Appears to be a qualified appointee.
Please vote yes on this nominee.
Can't appoint a Democrat ? Find a Dem .
As a Hoosier, I remember the amount of persuading it took for Mike Pence to agree to the needle exchange, which turned the situation around very quickly. If Dr. Adams deserves as much credit as they say for advocating for this decision, then he seems to be a strong pick.
