U.S. Coronavirus Death Toll Passes 2,977 - The Number of Americans Who Died on 9/11

- We've reached a grim milestone in the U.S.—on the evening of March 30, the number of Americans who died from coronavirus passed those who died during the September 11th attacks.
- The Centers for Disease Control - and all Americans - are hoping to avoid surpassing another milestone: the H1N1 "swine flu" pandemic killed 12,469 Americans between April 2009 and April 2010.
- Epidemiologists, however, are worried: COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus, is much more contagious and many times more deadly than H1N1. Another important difference: H1N1 illnesses responded well to antiviral drugs already used to treat the flu.
- 32 states have now issued stay-at-home orders.
- The White House recently extended its social distancing guidelines until April 30.
- As of March 30, presidential primaries have been pushed back in 14 states and Puerto Rico.
