Committee Watch: The Mueller Report, the Border Crisis, and Pathways to Universal Healthcare Coverage

Before bills and nominations are brought up for a passage vote in Congress, they typically have to be considered and approved by relevant committees ― which also conduct oversight of federal agencies. Here’s a look at what Congressional committees will be holding hearings on this week.

MONDAY
- The House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing titled “Lessons from the Mueller Report: Presidential Obstruction and Other Crimes” featuring testimony from Nixon era White House Counsel John Dean, former federal prosecutors, and a legal scholar. 2pm
TUESDAY
- The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing titled “The Secure and Protect Act: a Legislative Fix to the Crisis at the Southwest Border”. 10am
- The House Budget Committee will hold a hearing titled “The Costs of Climate Change: Risks to the U.S. Economy and the Federal Budget”. 10am
- The Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee will hold a hearing titled “Data Brokers and the Impact on Financial Data Privacy, Credit, Insurance, Employment and Housing”. 10am
- The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust Law will hold a hearing titled “Online Platforms and Market Power, Part 1: The Free and Diverse Press”. 2pm
WEDNESDAY
- The House Intelligence Committee will hold an open hearing titled “Lessons from the Mueller Report: Counterintelligence Implications of Volume 1”. 9am
- The House Ways & Means Committee will hold a hearing titled “Pathways to Universal Health Coverage”. 10am
- The Senate Commerce Committee will hold an oversight hearing for the Federal Communications Commission featuring testimony from the five FCC commissioners. 10am
- The House Science, Space, and Technology Committee will hold a hearing titled “Combating Sexual Harassment in Science”. 10am
- The House Homeland Security Committee will hold a hearing titled “Assessing FEMA’s Readiness for Future Disasters”. 10am
- The House Armed Services Committee will hold a markup hearing for the National Defense Authorization Act for FY2020. 10am
- The House Judiciary Committee will hold a markup hearing for six bills, including to make lynching a federal crime and permanently reauthorize the September 11th victim compensation fund. 10am
- The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hold a hearing titled “NATO Expansion: Examining the Accession of North Macedonia”. 10:15am
- The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust & Competition Policy will hold a hearing titled “Your Doctor/Pharmacist/Insurer Will See You Now: Competitive Implications of Vertical Consolidation in the Healthcare Industry”. 2:30pm
THURSDAY
- The House Intelligence Committee will hold an open hearing titled “National Security Challenges of Artificial Intelligence, Manipulated Media, and ‘Deepfakes’”. 9am
- The Senate Agriculture Committee will hold a hearing titled “Certainty in Global Markets for the U.S. Agriculture Sector”. 9:30am
- The Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee will hold a hearing to “Examine the Outlook for Wildland Fire and Management Programs for 2019”. 10am
