Government Shuts Down

by Countable | 1.20.18

The Senate blocked a stopgap government funding bill on a 50-49 vote Friday night causing a partial government shutdown. The House approved the measure on a 230-197 vote Thursday.

The bill would have kept the government funded for another four weeks, reauthorized the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for six years, and extended delays to several taxes imposed by Obamacare. Lawmakers say they need the additional time to negotiate bipartisan agreements on long-term spending levels and a solution for the so-called Dreamers prior to the March 5 expiration of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

The lack of an agreement on those issues led 44 Senate Democrats and 5 Republicans to oppose the proposal. With Republicans controlling 51 seats and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) at home recovering from surgery, at least 10 Democratic votes were required for the bill to meet the Senate’s 60-vote cloture threshold to limit debate.

Those votes failed to materialize, as only five Democrats — Sens. Joe Donnelly (IN), Heidi Heitkamp (ND), Joe Manchin (WV), Doug Jones (AL), and Claire McCaskill (MO) — voted in favor of the stopgap bill. The bill was opposed by five Republicans — including Sens. Lindsey Graham (SC), Jeff Flake (AZ), Rand Paul (KY), and Mike Lee (UT). Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) also voted against the measure so that he’d be able to recall the bill for a vote at his discretion, which parliamentary rules allow him to do as long he's on the side that prevails in the initial vote.

The Senate will remain in session over the weekend in the hope of passing legislation to restore government funding. If any amendments are made to the bill from its current form and the Senate passes it, the bill will have to go back to the House for another vote before it can go to President Donald Trump’s desk. We’ll keep you posted as news develops.

Tell your senators whether they should support or oppose the stopgap funding bill or other proposals to keep the government open and reauthorize CHIP using the Take Action button, then join the conversation below!

Democrats blocked it? Ummm...no. Four republicans voted against the bill. When the entire government is ‘run’ by the GOP and we still have a shutdown, don’t blame the democrats. This is Trump’s shutdown.

I have to say that headline is grotesquely inadequate, imprecise and misleading. Countable should know better. [For those coming in late, the headline ORIGINALLY read: “Senate Democrats block stopgap funding bill, causing gov’t shutdown.” That’s the headline I’m referring to in my comment. It’s been changed to the more accurate, though considerably more mundane, headline “Government Shuts Down.”]

This is a misleading and damaging headline. Republicans control all three levers of govt. This shutdown falls squarely in the laps of the president, Paul Ryan, and Mitch McConnell. Please revise your reporting so it resembles some kind of accuracy.

Stop this insane playground beat down and pretend you are grown ups. Stop following this insanely unpopular misogynistic s**t hole of a so-called president and lead with decisions that are compassionate and will make us proud to be Americans again.

Pretty disappointed in Countable’s choice of wording here. Kind of pretty stupid for the best term I can use.

Rethink your title Countable. it could read, “ Trump chaos governing style backfires and government shut down.” Trump created the DACA crisis when he repealed Obama’s executive order for no apparent reason. Republican congressional dysfunction failed to bring it to the floor for a vote, and it would have been easy to include DACA in this bill. Instead, fully knowing that the Democrats had drawn the line at DACA, they refused to include it to create the scenario “the Democrats shut down the government”. The republicans began their well rehearsed talking points that the “Schumer Shutdown” was because Democrats love illegals over our military defending us all. They included CHIP because they can appear compassionate toward healthcare and children while accusing the Democrats of putting illegal foreigners over our own children. The shutdown took place because the Republicans calculate it can be used to their advantage in the 2018 elections. It will remain this way as long as their smear campaign is effective and polling shows that Democrats are damaged and The media focuses on the shutdown and not Russia or prostitute payoffs.

That headline is “false!” When GOP Senators are in the Majority and 4 of them join the Democrats, it should read: GOP Senators join the Democrats in blocking the bill! It’s a bill neither party can fully support!

Sorry Jordan but it needs SIXTY votes to end the DEBATE on the bill and allow it to go to a vote. If the Democrats has allowed it to go to a vote, it would take 51 votes to pass. So the Democrats DID block the temporary spending by not even allowing it to go to a vote. By their actions, the Senate Democrats have told the American people that illegal aliens are MORE important to them than American citizens and jobs for them.

McConnell, Ryan & djt are despicable. This is the only time a government shut down has occurred when one party has held the house, senate & white house. The republicans DO NOT know how to govern which includes COMPROMISE. This is an abdication of leadership, a Trump the Chump shut down.

This time the cause behind the "shutdown" is worthy of the tactic. Repubs constantly use DACA, CHIP and the ACA as leverage to shove bad legislature into law. The fact is that Repubs are actually a political minority ithat rule this country. Proof of that is in the polls that show Trump's has an approval rating of 37% but that represents 85% of the Repub base. Frankly that IS the definition of facsism. This time the shutdown is a "cause above self" and as such is a noble and essential way for the majority of Americans to finally be heard. I, for one, am in complete support of the shutdown. It has allowed myself and others in the true American majority to be heard.

The Democrats hate the TRUTH and LOSING! The democrats have cost this country and every individual, that actually pays taxes, millions of dollars based on their corruption and trying to keep the focus away from them! Have you noticed they don’t talk about the sexual allegations against their own. Now if you only shut your damn mouths about the lies and fake agenda you all spread about Trump maybe we can get back to business and keep the economy growing! Could you just imagine what Trump could have done without all the lies and bull crap that he has to try to overcome each and every day? Got over your LOSS! TRUMP IS OUR PRESIDENT! That includes you too! So if you want the lying, cheating, stealing, corruption focused democrats back in office, then you better waste your time trying to get someone with some moral character, if you can find one, to run against him! Good Luck!

Good!! So, what are dems supposed to do, cave in to republicans because they are republicans? This is a bunch of crap, trump said he would force a government shutdown back in April of last year. This is what he wanted on his first year anniversary. And don’t think he’s not laughing at McConnell and Ryan, because he is, ha, ha, ha........
