Congress Unanimously Passes Bills to End Shutdown, Trump to Sign

How do you feel about funding the gov't for 3 weeks while negotiating a border security deal?

by Countable | Updated on 1.25.19

The longest government shutdown in U.S. history will come to an end after 35 days, after Congress unanimously passed bills to reopen affected agencies through February 15th while negotiations over border security funding play out. The bills will are expected to be signed into law by President Donald Trump later Friday evening.

The Senate amended two of the House-passed continuing resolutions before passing them by voice vote:

  • H.J.Res. 28 was amended to reopen through February 15th the agencies affected by the funding lapse ― Agriculture; Energy & Water; Financial Services & General Government; Homeland Security; Interior & Environment; State & Foreign Operations; and Transportation, Housing and Urban Development.
  • H.J.Res. 31 was amended to form a conference committee of bipartisan House and Senate lawmakers who will negotiate a compromise on border security funding before February 15th.

A few hours later, the House followed suit in passing the bills by voice vote.

What’s next?

The conference committee will soon hold meetings to start the process of working out a compromise on border security funding before the deadline of February 15th. Here’s a look at the lawmakers who have been designated as conferees so far:

Senate

  • Republican Sens. Richard Shelby (AL), Shelley Moore Capito (WV), John Hoeven (ND), and Roy Blunt (MO).
  • Democratic Sens. Patrick Leahy (VT), Dick Durbin (IL), and Jon Tester (MT).

House

  • Democratic Reps. Nita Lowey (NY), Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA), David Price (NC), Barbara Lee (CA), Henry Cuellar (TX), and Pete Aguilar (CA).
  • Republican Reps. Kay Granger (TX), Chuck Fleischman (TN), Tom Graves (GA), and Steven Palazzo (MS).

We need a budget (without any moronic wall or more tax cuts for the 1%) rather than just a three week hiatus between white house tantrums. Congress must step up and do their jobs.

Building a stupid wall should not be what keeps the government from running. It is not a bargaining chip. It is a waste.

I’m hoping the Mueller report comes out in less than three weeks.

I commend my representatives for holding the line and refusing to give in to the orange baby’s temper tantrum. I just hate that this ordeal may repeat itself in three week’s time.

Now that the first hurdle has been overcome, our lawmakers need to delete “the aisle”, grow up, and work together to do the right thing! They need to identify the important issues and come up with solutions. They need to come up with a comprehensive plan for managing immigration. Our southern border is just one part of immigration policy. But we/they need to remember that this country was founded by immigrants and none of us but Native Americans truly have the right to deny entry to others.

How would you feel if you worked for a company that had funding in 3 week increments? How loyal would you be to such an employer? How would your morale be?

I hope this never happens again. My family has been worried that we'd lose our home during this ignorance. Stop using us as pawns.

Don’t let him shut down the government again in 15 days! This was the same damned bill they could’ve passed before Christmas without hurting our federal workers. Money for border security, but no wall.

This shutdown was a stupid stunt from trump. He’s a disaster on every possible measure. What a sadistic cruel creep. trump’s a traitor and a corrupt criminal money laundering mobster. He’s holding the office illegitimately ( every day new evidence of trump RUSSIA conspiracy to defraud USA - today it was a Roger Stone indictment and arrest). trump is doing Putin’s bidding. Putin sent mercenary military to Venezuela over the past 35 days. Anyone notice? Get trump and trump’s corrupt criminal regime out of our government before the 21 days go by. He’s absolutely unacceptable on every measure. The trump shutdown was a trump stunt and he created suffering. He’s a sadistic creep.

I'm happy federal workers will receive their paychecks soon. I hope they all get a raise. If Trump tries to shutdown the government over a wall or barrier again I will remind him what he said about not needing a wall from sea to shiny sea. That's right, I pulled a copy of the video from the internet. I have no problem reminding Trump of his own words via the Twitter. Trump lied to his supporters faces, so they would give him their money. Hopefully they can get their money back. There should be severe consequences for holding federal workers paychecks hostage.

Now let's pass a budget without funding for a wall and without tax cuts for the 1%. Let's also pass a law shutting down all future shutdowns. The American people should never be held hostage by their own government.

All those federal workers had to suffer for over a month and yet the federal government has absolutely nothing to show for it. What a horrific and absurd situation that this White House squatter has gotten us into! Congress could have just passed a clean funding bill back in December, but Trump and the far right wanted to see if they could extort the Democrats into giving Trump funding for the wall. Our government is a total disgrace and it’s high time this criminal in the White House was impeached!

The wall would be a waste of money. Do not let trump's bumper sticker mentality interfere with REAL border security. The money would be best spent on technology and larger (and more) ports of entry as well as more personnel stationed at those ports and more workers to process the claims for asylum

I hope that these congressmen/congresswomen and the president have learned a valuable lesson because this is not about the Democrats or Republicans. This is not a time to push your personal and political agenda. It is time to work together for a common goal for the betterment and safety of this country.
