What's Congress Voting On? Week of January 17, 2017

by Countable | 3.20.17

Confirmation hearings for Trump's nominees will be the focus of Congressional activity this week, with the House adjourned and the Senate working a short week due to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Inauguration Day.

A total of eight Trump nominees are scheduled to go through confirmation hearings this week. On Tuesday, Betsy DeVos (Education) and Rep. Ryan Zinke (Interior) will lead things off. Things get a lot busier on Wednesday with four hearings all slated to begin at 10:00am ET — Wilbur Ross (Commerce), Scott Pruitt (EPA), Nikki Haley (UN Ambassador) and Rep. Tom Price (HHS). The Senate will conclude its week on Thursday with hearings for Steven Mnuchin (Treasury) and Rick Perry (Energy).

As far as bills moving through Congress, the Senate only has one bill on the docket for Tuesday. The GAO Access and Oversight Act would enhance the Government Accountability Office's ability to investigate fraud in federal programs. The Senate hasn't yet announced other bills that it will consider this week, so check back soon to see what else they'll be voting on.

No to DeVos! She has never taught, attended, or had a child in public schools. She is on record as a proponent of taking tax dollars and giving them to privately run charter schools that have zero accountability to parents. Charter schools who also have the right to expel students who do not meet various guidelines from behaviour to grades. She has gone on record to back creationism in schools as well as support anti-LGBT organizations such as Focus on the Family. She will destroy public education as Secretary of Education. Therefore, do not confirm her for this position. Our children, our future, is at stake.

We must firmly reject DeVos and Price! Betsy DeVos has no experience attending, sending children to, or working in public schools and has been a vocal and financial supporter of diverting public money to charter, which have no oversight or accountability, and private schools who aren't held to the same standards as public schools. There has been no demonstrable improvement in student outcomes in charter or private schools. She also advocates teaching creationism is schools alongside actual science! Tom Price has denied the need for women's access to contraception. He fails to comprehend that birth control not only allows women to design their own future, but is often necessary for symptom management of medical disorders affecting women. He has put money into stocks of a company. He then introduced a bill on to profit said company and therefore himself. These individuals exemplify ineptitude and corruption! Their confirmations would be disastrous for our nation!

Please vote no on DeVos. She is unqualified for this position, and has a personal agenda aimed at moving funding for public schools into the private school pockets. I am also worried about her conviction that the Christian religion should be taught in school. Our nation is a diverse place full of different faiths, and devaluing those other faiths by unconstitutionally combining church and state is to nobody's benefit but those who are already privileged. Please also vote no on Pruitt, who has a huge conflict of interest if put in charge of the EPA. Who stands to PROFIT more from the removal of the protections granted by the EPA than a man who's financial security is based in nonrenewable resources that threaten the environment? The position would also put this man in such a place of power that he could easily place regulations that limit other companies while green lighting his own, essentially becoming the demagogue of the industry.

Do NOT allow Scott Pruitt to head the EPA. This will be catastrophic for climate progress and environmental and sustainable development in this country.

Please do not vote to confirm any nominee that has not complied in full with the vetting by the Office of Government Ethics process and full disclosure of tax returns and possible conflicts of interest. To confirm any appointees that have not been fully vetted is unsafe and un-American.

Vote no on DeVos; she has a personal agenda for funding private and charter schools for the wealthy. I'm also fearful of her belief that Christian faith should be taught in schools. We are a nation of many beliefs which should not be mixed with educating all children of all faiths. Keep her out of education.

I oppose hearings for any nominee that has not complied in full with the vetting by the Office of Government Ethics process and full disclosure of tax returns and possible conflicts of interest. Threats of reprisal or dissolution of the office by members of Congress or turning a blind eye to the expectations of your constituents will be viewed as contempt for an impartial assessment of nominees and disrespect for constituent's desire to ensure there are no constitutional violations that occur by taking office.

Betty DeVos is uniquely unqualified to run the department of Education. From her inability to explain legislated assessment to her uniquely regressive views about LGBTQ she will be the death blow to public education which is supposed the be the great equalizer in American Society.

Please do not confirm DeVos. She is severely unqualified, her voucher initiative will reduce resources for public schools, and she has major conflicts of interest.

I received public education. My daughter will start her public education this Fall because we believe in public education. We need an experienced, qualified secretary of education who actually wants to strengthen and improve all public schools. I ask you to vote NO on Betsy DeVos so that my child and all children can receive a good education.

Please vote no on Ms. DeVos - she is uninformed, inexperienced, and has no experience with the reality of public schools. Do your job and vote no on this nomination. This is not about partisan politics it is about education.

Absolutely DO NOT confirm Pruitt for EPA . He is not a scientist, doesn't believe in the facts behind climate change (probably because he has benefited from the fossil fuel industry), his performance in OK included suing the EPA 14 times! He didn't stop the pollution of waterways in OK and the state has more earthquake activity (fracking has contributed to) than ever. The environment is not a partisan issue! We all need clean air and water to say the least.

Vote NO regarding DeVos, Pruitt, Price, Zinke, and Mnunich - none of these folks are advocates for the departments they have been nominated to lead. DeVils hasn't disclosed necessary documents for OGE vetting, perhaps others as well. Pruitt is climate change denier and has sued EPA. Price does not support ACA - his "plan" takes us back to high premiums and excluded coverages. Minke does not advocate for protection of public lands. Munich - foreclosure king. All appear to be protectors of those with the most - and they are all part of that group - at the expense of those with the least.
