Alabama Recount? Not Likely...But Moore Is Still Fundraising

by Countable | 12.19.17

Updated December 19, 2017: Roy Moore lost the special election for an Alabama Senate seat a week ago, but he's still fundraising. On Monday he sent out a campaign appeal requesting donations for his "Election Integrity Program", which he says is collecting stories of voter fraud and "various other irregularities" from across the state before the election certification on December 28.

The Secretary of State, however, has not received any actual reports of fraud or irregularities from the campaign. Nor has the campaign offered to pay for a recount, which they would have to fund since the state is not planning one for reasons detailed below.

Moore has still not formally conceded defeat in the race, and may never do so.

What’s the story?

Despite the Alabama special election Senate race being called for Democrat Doug Jones, GOP candidate Roy Moore has yet to concede defeat. He has dangled the idea of a recount in front of his supporters and encouraged them to wait for the final results.

But is a recount in Alabama likely? Not according to the numbers.

Alabama law requires an automatic recount if the difference between the results of the two top candidates is 0.5 percent or less.

As of midnight December 13, according to an analysis by the Washington Post, Jones had 671,151 votes and Moore 650,436. That’s 49.9 percent of the vote for Jones and 48.4 percent for Moore. Write-in votes account for 22,819 votes.

The difference between the two is 1.5 percent, which is not close enough to automatically trigger a recount.

Moore has said that the outcome may change once overseas service member’s votes are counted, but that would require 20,715 votes for Moore to come in from service members overseas and none for Jones. There are only 8,700 Alabama voters serving overseas as of May 2016.

Even if some of the write-in votes were miscounted and went to Moore in a recount, it would be highly unlikely it would be enough to push him past Jones.

According to the Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill, this election is over. Moore could foot the bill for a recount himself, but there’s been no word from his campaign they have any intention to do that.

He never has to concede defeat either, but according to the numbers, that’s what happened.

What do you think?

If Moore, or some other party, wants to foot the bill for a recount, should there be one? Do you support Moore's campaign in investigating potential voter fraud and election irregularities, or do you think he is simply fomenting distrust in the electoral process to appeal to his base?

Get off your horse and go to jail. Own up to your previous molestation accusations with the shred of dignity you might have left. Ridiculous that he was even allowed to run amidst the charges against him.

What I am really curious about, from a data driven decision making perceptive, is an analysis of the write in ballots. Because, had those votes gone for Moore, we would not be celebrating this morning AND WE NEED TRUTH TO FIGHT TRUMP. We must look at this moment in time, this battle for decency, from every angle and learn from it! The Africa-American vote saved us this time, but it may not be able to save us in the elections to come. We must come together as a united force for decency.

I am so tired of the FAKE NEWS rant. Just because you don’t like a particular news story or interpretation of events doesn’t make it fake news. That’s a political caricature by a morally corrupt demagogue attempting to manipulate the entire news media through intimidation; exactly as he did to his fellow republican candidates and democratic opponent during the last election. And as far as reading the classics, while fiction does often imitate life why don’t you read the Federalist or Anti Federalist Papers so you can understand the real issues faced by the great experiment known as our American democracy. Just because you read To Kill a Mocking Bird, which I did as a high school student 40 yrs ago, doesn’t make you literate.

I agree with John. How is it 48.8% of the vote went to a bigot. I know there are uneducated individuals that will complain that the sexual accusations against Moore are false or made up, BUT there is still the pro slavery comments, the racial slurs against Native & Asian Americans, the slurs against gays and lesbians, the slurs against Jews, the comments against women voting.

Roy Moore is an egotistical, showboating sex offender EXACTLY like Trump. Hopefully the nation has learned that the fast-talking used car salesman-type of politician will usually sell you a lemon.

This means we are roughly 5 votes away from impeaching 45. Who will be the 5 republican senators that fall on the American people's side of history? My guess is Sen. Collins and Sen. Thune are 2 of them. But I am not sure on who the other 3 will be.

Alabama made the right choice. Doug Jones brings a good dose of hope for a positive future to their state. No need to change a thing.

The sad statistic here is the fact the less than half of the citizens of voting age in Alabama turned out at the polls, We need to get out the vote if we want to make this country a better place, for the people of the people.

Whatever the reason Jones won it is a day to celebrate. Moore was not fit for office aside from the allegations made by the women. Someone as radical as he does not belong in the senate ! Thank you Alabama!

What you do comes back to you, and Roy Moore is feeling it. He can ride his horse into the sunset because his political career is over. Thanks to the good people of Alabama for standing up and voting against Mr. Moore who seems to have no conscience. The rest of the GOP will be haunted by their decisions too if they endorse this corrupt reverse Robinhood tax bill! It isn't a legacy their children will be proud of!

A recount for Moore in Alabama is completely unnecessary; he shouldn’t have even been a contender in this race! Regardless of the media and who says what, all you need to observe is the man’s behavior and speech. I won’t write a small essay here, but just watch and listen for yourself: much like Donald Trump, Moore’s conduct is deplorable.

So sad that Alabama has sent a man so liberal he’s blue to the Senate. But that’s what happens when #FakeNews allegations sprout up against people for political gain. Molestation? Maybe, but the allegations are 40 years old, well outside the statute of limitations. And while I’m sure no here has read any classic literature, opening up “To Kill a Mockingbird” will shed much light on what happens when false sexual assault allegations are believed.

Moore can call for a recount all he wants but, sadly no one wants a pedophile to be their Senator.
