House Blocks Dem. Rep’s Impeachment Effort

Congressman Al Green’s (D-TX) push to impeach President Donald Trump was blocked on a bipartisan basis by the House of Representatives Wednesday.
Green introduced articles of impeachment that were unrelated to alleged obstruction of justice or the ongoing investigations into his presidential campaign’s connections to Russia. Instead, the resolution focused on Trump’s failure to denounce white nationalists in Charlottesville and a variety of actions and statements Trump has made about certain groups and individuals.
Under House rules, Green’s legislation was considered a "privileged resolution" that, had the House not taken action to block it, would’ve forced an impeachment debate on the House floor after two days. Lawmakers avoided that by voting on a “motion to table” the bill, which in essence kills the proposal without giving it an opportunity to pass.
All House Republicans opposed the impeachment resolution and voted to kill it, and they were joined by 126 of the chamber’s Democrats. About one-third of House Democrats supported the effort, with 58 voting against the motion to table and another four voting present.
