As reported by the Washington Post, "members of the White House's Election Integrity Commission have seized on a report about same-day registration [in New Hampshire] to allege that massive fraud might have swung the state's 2016 vote."
The commission is accusing "thousands of voters of criminal activity for living in New Hampshire but holding out-of-state driver’s licenses."
Voters and election experts in the Granite State say the allegation is baseless.
In May, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order establishing the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity to look into voter fraud during the 2016 election. The vice chairman of the commission said the numbers coming out of New Hampshire are evidence of wrongdoing.
For some, this wasn’t surprising. In February, White House policy adviser Stephen Miller told ABC News:
"Having worked before on a campaign in New Hampshire, I can tell you that this issue of busing voters into New Hampshire is widely known by anyone who’s worked in New Hampshire politics. It’s very real. It’s very serious. This morning, on this show, is not the venue for me to lay out all the evidence."
On Thursday, New Hampshire House Speaker Shawn Jasper, a Republican, said he had such evidence. Jasper, as the Post reported, "released data on same-day registrants that he'd obtained from the secretary of state's office. In November 2016, 6,540 voters had registered to vote on Election Day. As of Aug. 30, just 1,014 of those voters had obtained a New Hampshire drivers license. A few hundred voters did not obtain state licenses but had registered cars in the state."
Based on these numbers, Jasper alleged thousands of people cast fraudulent votes in the 2016 election. Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, the vice chairman of the Election Integrity Commission, also used the findings to allege widespread voter fraud, which he said could have led to Trump losing the state--and stolen a U.S. Senate seat from Republicans.
"If 59.2 percent or more of them went for [Democratic Sen. Maggie] Hassan, then the election was stolen through voter fraud," Kobach wrote in a column for Breitbart. "That's likely, since the surrounding states are Democrat (sic) strongholds."
The New Hampshire Departments of State and Safety provided the data to Jasper in a letter. In it, they offered various explanations for the numbers.
"It is likely that some unknown number of these individuals moved out of New Hampshire, it is possible that a few may have never driven in New Hampshire or have ceased driving, however, it is expected that an unknown number of the remainder continue to live and drive in New Hampshire. If they have established their residence in New Hampshire, they may have failed to obtain a New Hampshire driver’s license." (JH-2)
"Apparently, Kobach is saying that voting should be limited to people who drive cars," said David Becker, director of the Center for Election Innovation.
On Thursday night, the Washington Post reached out to voters who’d "cast ballots but held out-of-state-IDs." Various college students responded, saying they were living in New Hampshire but hadn’t changed their licenses.

I live in NH and no it is NOT "common knowledge" that we "bus people in" to vote illegally, that's absurd. While there is a legitimate investigation into a foreign government interfering with our election, our president is laying the ground work for increasing voter suppression and increasing federal control over elections. Anyone who is not concerned about Trump's authoritarian tendencies, is not paying attention. This is absolute BS and we will not have our votes and voices silenced!
There is not a single independent, credible source to back up the Trump administration's claims. In three decades of presidential elections, independent investigations have uncovered only a few hundred - A FEW HUNDRED- examples of voter fraud nationwide - OVER THE SPACE OF MULTIPLE DECADES. To say Trump's committee's charges are "trumped up" is the understatement of the century. If this accusation by itself isn't clear evidence that Trump is planning to find a "legal" way to postpone the 2020 election, I don't know what is.
Again, why is this committee focused on preventing people from voting, yet the administration is doing nothing about future Russian interference. It's not future elections that should be delayed, but the 2016 election that should be voided.
It's my understanding that republicans don't want same day voter registration because it disproportionately favors the Democratic Party. It has nothing to do with voter fraud. Like everything else it has everything to do with voter suppression.
It's all about equating voter REGISTRATION discrepancies with actual voter fraud. It will all be debunked, but red meat for the uninformed and misinformed Trump base in the meantime.
Please give us a break, and dismantling this Commission. What a waste of money and time.
Now this sounds like alternative facts gone wild. Why is it that Trump would believe this and not that the Russians did interfere with our election. Oh, what a tangled web he weaves! I believe NOTHING that comes as truth from this administration. THEY CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!
Another act of diversion to "help" us forget collusion with Russia.
Expect every state that did not vote for Trump to be named for one reason or another. The panel is a sham. ..designed to achieve voter suppression.
Surely there are more ways to track these people than drivers license registrations. This doesn't prove they didn't live in New Hampshire at the time. It sounds like conclusions are being drawn with incomplete data.
Voter purging, voter suppression, and cross-check are the only credible sources of vote tampering, but since these are the tools of the Republicans, you won't hear anything about it. This "report" of voter fraud has already been debunked and thousands of people with out-of-state driver's licenses were confirmed to be college students living, and therefore voting legitimately, in the state. This is a big nothing-burger as the criminals in the WH like to say. If Miller is saying it's "common knowledge that voters are bused in", it's only because he and his party have been doing it. These people are infamous for naming programs to sound like the exactly opposite (and therefore sounding more palatable) of what they actually are - No Child Left Behind anyone? More like EVERY child (except the super rich ones) left behind. And they also are infamous for accusing others of what they themselves are doing, it's called projection, and can be seen here as well as in comments like McConnell actually having the audacity to claim Democrats are being "unprecedentedly obstructionist" after 8 years of nothing but Republican obstruction to the point of STEALING a Supreme Court appointment. Liars and thieves every last one of them!
Trump just has to have the most votes, the biggest crowds, the highest approval rating, the biggest of everything, doing things bigger and better than anyone has ever done it before. Alway right, never wrong...it's always some else's fault. What a spoiled rich brat.
I don't believe a word out of the election integrity commission including the name.
Just another distraction
It's insane! There weren't millions of illegal votes in the US, certainly not thousands in New Hampshire. 45 is so thin skinned and egotistical, that he can't stand that he lost the popular vote. Waste of time and tax payer money.
This accusation has no evidence to back it up. I lived in New England for 20 years and never heard of this happening until Trump made it up. Any action taken on voting rights needs to be based in fact. No exceptions.
Absolutely bogus report! No voter fraud in NH and this is just a sorry excuse for more voter intimidation tactics! Shame on the White House!
Ridiculous. At worst, Kobach and Ko. seem to have uncovered a group of people who failed to update their drivers licenses in a timely way after moving to NH -- hardly a newsworthy scandal.
This "committee" is a waste of time, money, and only serves to further Trump's fantasy of voter fraud, which has been proven TIME AND AGAIN hasn't happened. Facts and data have GOT to start coming into play here.
This is a bunch of hooey. There is no basis for the claim. This sham Commission, aimed at voter suppression, needs to be disbanded today!
