The data suggest that the opioid crisis is an issue we need to work together to address, most of the deaths are actually illegal opioids, while pain management patients are not abusing their meds at statistically high rates. The crackdown has limited access to meds for patients who have been stable and in compliance for years, and there is an escalation of deaths due to complications of pain in chronic conditions. Furthermore, we have access to inexpensive testing to understand how patients process medication that is rarely utilized and should be a standard protocol that can predict issues with medication metabolism and help prevent opioid (and other medication) related deaths due to altered metabolism of prescription medication. This common sense approach is an affordable way to utilize prevention of prescription pain management related deaths.
