It is time for the Administration and Congress to work together to pass legislation making it a federal crime to murder a law enforcement officer. We must send a clear message that as a society, we will not tolerate the murder of law enforcement officers any longer. Those who would contemplate murdering a law enforcement officer need to know that they could be executed for their crime. This would put the death penalty back into play, since many states have abandoned using the death penalty. It would also put all law enforcement officers under one Federal statute. Since the murder of a federal law enforcement officer is a capital offense and is subject to the death penalty, why not simply expand this statute. By making the murder of a law enforcement officer a federal crime, it will allow all federal agencies to immediately allocate significant resources to assist with the investigation and the apprehension of the suspect.
