As our intelligence services have said in the brief this administration asked them to produce and then deep-sixed, this travel ban, and all such country-specific travel bans, would not assist in keeping out terrorists and would not keep us 'safer'. Such blanket bans are ineffective and ignore real drivers of radicalism and the keys to identifying those with ill intent. The ban instead creates confusion and anger, potentially exacerbating the risks we face by fueling the idea that this is in fact a Muslim ban, that the US is structurally and legislatively prejudiced against Islam, willing to bomb Muslim countries, but not take in their refugees or visitors. Perception, in this case, is as dangerous as reality. We are better than this.
