In the NPR article, deterrence expert Negeen Pegahi stated it best, "the U.S., whose conventional forces far surpass Russia's, is deliberately and mistakenly playing into its adversary's hands." If we allowed this tit for tat military action to continue then there is no end and we would be playing Russia's game. Also, as General Mattis stated, a nuclear bomb is a nuclear bomb. The effects would be world shattering and our predictions about how we or our allies and adversaries would react are surely futile. However, I do empathize with the position that American should always be prepared for the worst. My opinion is, we are plenty prepared and we now need to shift our focus to investing in diplomacy, demilitarization, and peace efforts.
