Norms are not enough to keep corruption out of the executive branch, and likely not the legislative or judicial either. Republicans in particular have moved to a position where violating norms is completely acceptable if it advantages them over Democrats, which is both reprehensible and dangerous for the stability of our government. If reforms are not swift to block the blatant abuse of the current system of norms, accountability in government, or even the appearance of it, will be forgotten. We will end of as a true plutocracy, a state where corruption is the rule not the exception. We are already closer than we believe, and a lot more drastic reform will be necessary to get us back to where most people like to believe we still are: a transparent and egalitarian society.
