As an aging American who has always worked full time but rarely made enough to cover the premiums of health insurance, the ACA allowed me to purchase insurance for the first time in many many years. The new plan proposed by the republicans would do several things that would hinder or even block my ability to purchase health care. 1. It would offer the lowest incentives for older people; the very people who need it most. The result would be only young healthy people able to afford insurance and a group of older, pre-Medicare people dying early due to untreated health issues. While I'm sure this would help "fix" the social security issue...I do not believe it will be at the right cost. 2. If I drop my insurance because of financial issues, I will be penalized by a 30% increase on my first premium, which would basically prevent me from getting it again. 3. The incentives are not offered up front; if I can't afford the premiums, how can I pay them for a year before receiving an equivalent tax break at the end of the year? The whole thing desperately needs more work and needs input from democrats and independents. It is short-sighted, under-researched, and rushed.
