The wealthiest country on earth can sacrifice one measly day of productivity for strengthening our democracy. To oppose this is to stand against voting rights and to stand with the wave of disenfranchising measures of 21st century Jim Crow movement (voter ID laws, voter registration purging and most horrendously, the closing of polling locations in urban communities). We can trade another holiday for this one if necessary. In these divided times, we need to cherish our democracy above all else. To do that we must maximize turnout.
