Private donations should be encouraged and accepted, but should be supplemental. Congress should appropriate sufficient funds that maintain the vitality and beauty of our National Parks. Any proposal that suggests to replace or substitute taxpayer dollars with private funds should be blocked. The Citizens United decision has shown us that private entities and interests have more influence than they're willing to admit and will push incessantly until they win. Replacing taxpayer dollars with private funds will only make it easier for developers and Big Oil to wreak havoc on our precious National Parks by pushing lobbyists and money to encroach further on our sacred public lands.Let's heed the lessons of Citizens United and reject any proposal that uses money, private donations and the like as influence - even if their intentions are supposedly good in nature. Congress has plenty of taxpayer money that they can allocate to preserve National Parks. They can cut defense spending further and continue to rein in medical costs - among many other options.
