A gig economy with workers’ rights is the optimal balance for US living in 2019. Job security coupled with flexibility of working hours should be what we strive for in this current social atmosphere.
Our lives are in flux. If someone chooses to work five days on with two days off one week, and then three days on with four days off the next week, and is able to pay their bills and enjoy their optimal leisure time, great.
We should embrace the right for workers to choose when they want to work - as long as they are effective in doing so. If you’ve finished your job ahead of schedule, go out and enjoy the day. If you only need a job this week but not next week, you still deserve legal protection. These freedoms are what we’ve been working towards for hundreds of years. To be able to work under terms that work for us.
In order for such ideals to be realized, those types of workers need legal backing and protections tailored to them. Luckily, these protections already exist in the form of class action lawsuits. They certainly should not be barred from employing them.
