In 2006, I became aware of the Arab-Israeli conflict when Israel invaded Lebanon. not only could I not go to Lebanon, but friends and family of mine were either evacuated or forced to flee. the toll on civilians, infrastructure, and the environment from the siege was devastating on a country that has been already been devastated. In 2007, I watched the same thing happen to Gaza only to learn that Operation Cast Lead was not an isolated incident but a reoccurring event.
then I learned about the annexation of land in the West Bank. Israeli settlers have created a situation of apartheid in Palestine and are slowly making a decades-old refugee crisis worse. The worst part? We the people of the United States have enabled it. BDS is not only our constitutional right, it's one of the only non-violent options left to disrupt the oppression of Palestinians. this bill would also enable our local government to meddle in international affairs, which I don't believe is ethical. but it is our right as private citizens to divest from states that occupy.
