Only the ignorant would call something this reckless "compassionate". This is the definition of economic illiteracy. This is putting your fingers in your ears, closing your eyes, and pretending the first rule of economics doesn't exist. But of course that's what big-government proponents proudly (and wrongly) proclaim - that scarcity isn't real, that you could have as much of anything as you want if it weren't for evil things like prices and money, that the only possible reason for something to be too expensive for you to afford as much as you want is that greedy, evil people make it so. To have that kind of ignorance to economics and blind faith in (an entirely untrustworthy) government would require, gee I don't know, like over a decade of propaganda and indoctrination during a person's formative years.
