College campuses are places where we go to gain a higher education and to enlighten our minds. Intellectuals arrive to expand their knowledge of the world around them. Universities and colleges should be places where all people are welcome to learn and to grow and to FEEL SAFE. Anytime a student feels unsafe or threatened on a college campus, something is not right and needs to be fixed. Whether it be that they feel unsafe because of weapons, or because of sexual assault, the approach to solving the unsafe situation needs to be changed. Officials cannot "sweep" sexual assaults "under the rug". Sexual abuse is real and dangerous and we need to do something about it. Administrators need to be aware of how frequent sexual abuse is on their campus and what they can actively do to prevent it, and to protect the victims. Lawyers should be allowed to represent student victims of sexual crimes, because they are constitutionally entitled to have that right.
