If we classify attacks against police as hate crimes, what stops other professions from getting "special protection?" This would only make the problems we are facing worse. There are people in the US that see the a portion of the police force as a bunch of overpowered brutes, which is true to an extent based on what we've seen in recent years. To adequately address this issue, we need to first stop militarizing the police, which only encourages them to act more violently. Second, we need to find a way to improve overall community relations between police and the rest of the citizenry in a nonviolent and non-divisive manner. When the people of this country, especially low-income minorities that are disproportionately affected by police violence, feel that "To Protect and To Serve" has become more again than just words on the sides of squad cars, only then will we find the solution to this challenge.
