It isn't so black and white. NATO was created for the means of containing the Soviet Union, and a major part of its power is allocated toward doing the same with Russia, today. This is more than economics. Russia has already shown that it has room to breathe, so we need to pull the leash by reaffirming our commitment to keeping Eastern European states sovereign. NATO is a sort of proxy device the United States uses to confront and control Russia. So no, we would not be pandering to other NATO states if we reaffirm our commitment; we would be giving a "heads up" to Russia.
