This concurrent resolution would express Congress’s acknowledgment that the climate change crisis is an “existential emergency” similar to the threat posed during World War II. It would also call for aggressive, immediate action to address the climate change challenge.

Specifically, this resolution would acknowledge that:

Massive, comprehensive, and urgent governmental action is required to address climate change;
Halting and reversing the climate emergency will require an economically just and managed phase-out of oil, gas and coal;
Any action must equitably and actively engage frontline communities, tribal governments and communities, people of color, and labor unions; and
The U.S. stands poised to reap substantial economic, social, and health benefits from a climate mobilization which far outweigh the costs of inaction.

Nothing in this resolution would empower the president to invoke authority on this issue under any Act of Congress. Because it’s non-binding, this resolution also wouldn’t institute a national emergency declaration or force the federal government to take any specific actions to combat greenhouse gas emissions that are causing global warming.

As a concurrent resolution, this legislation is non-binding and wouldn’t advance to the president’s desk if it’s agreed to by Congress.

I fear that a citizenry focused on the “here-and-now” is easily tricked by short term benefits that have negative long-term consequences. I fear that our legislators are more concerned about buffing their constituents than looking out for the long-term welfare of our country- and are way too eager to provide those short-term benefits to the “here-and-now” crowd.\nI fear the honor is generally being sacrificed/replaced by expediency. I hear politicians eloquently argue for one side of an issue and later, when it’s to their benefit, just as eloquently argue for the opposite side. OK, so they are good at arguing- but what is that they actually believe? What is it that they actually stand for? An honorable person has values that persist even when it is not convenient or expedient. An honorable person has a moral compass that stops them from doing something wrong even if it is not illegal.
