Yes, I think giving veterans preference in hiring is a sound idea, so long as they have the qualifications the contractor is looking for. It has long been done in civil service and local government jobs and can be a real help to veterans re-entering civilian life. However, I do think that the preference should only extend to veterans who are no more than 5 years from the date of their separation from military service. This hiring preference should be used to help veterans re-enter the civilian workforce. Someone more than 5 years out should have established a work history and should compete on an equal footing with other civilian applicants.
