This law could way too easily allow law enforcement to abuse their power and purposefully harass minorities and people of low socioeconomic status to get them to commit the crime in self defense. The laws we have to protect police officers are more than enough. Beyond the disastrous potent ion practical consequences of such a law, it is philosophically baseless. When crimes are committed against police, it is not a hate crime in the same sense that crimes against black or LGBT people are hate crimes because a police officer is a representative of the government, not a private citizen practicing a private religion or just existing in the color of their skin. It could be considered a political crime, but as stated, we already have laws that make assaulting police crimes in and of themselves.
