In 2017, the US gave about 50 billion dollars in military and economic assistance to foreign countries. Currently, one cannot confidently say how much of that aid is lost to corruption. However, we do know that US aid is significantly affected by misuse considering that 76% of US aid goes to countries that are generally corrupt according to Bill Easterly. However, it is those countries that primarily need the aid, which is why it it is good that this bill assesses how much a country is doing to fight corruption rather than how corrupt it is. This new system could also provide vital information to the world on international corruption, which could increase the US’ prestige around the world. Most importantly, it could lead to me increased effectiveness of US aid through its mechanism for investigating accusations of misuse.
