To those of you who have stated that having a phone and basic Internet access are dispensable luxuries: I congratulate you on your fortune, but I'm afraid you lead a charmed life. For most Americans, not having a phone means not having the ability to even be considered for employment, and homeless people don't really have a place to install land lines. Moreover, most entry level positions no longer accept paper applications, instead insisting that all applicants use their online forms. Without access to a phone and the internet these people have no way to progress past the point of needing charity and will continue, through no fault of their own, to require charity and welfare. I seriously don't understand why so many people don't seem to realize: the more you treat the poor as lepers, the less able they are to actually contribute to our society. Basic economics, people.
