We are the only true democracy that makes it hard for citizens to vote. While many states have laws requiring employers to allow time off to vote, they are not all paid hours and employers often discourage employees from using the time. Moreover, most of the laws don’t apply to small employers (under 50 employees) — which takes the teeth out of the law since small employers employ millions of citizens. We need flexible voting (e.g. no excuse absentee voting), weekend voting and/or a paid Federal voting holiday with major penalties for employers who don’t not cooperate.
