It’s an important first step in what needs to be a complete overhaul of the way we approach medical care in this country. This is just one example of how complex and ridiculously expensive the system can be. These surprise bills come about because there is no transparency in who is providing some of these services or their costs. Plus, in an emergency there is rarely time to sort through who is in-network and who isn’t when you use a “network” facility. What we really need, however, is universal coverage with no “networks” and every provider being reimbursed the same and cost of coverage to the patient being based on income.
