These so-called pro-“life” politicians are really just pro-BIRTH as they have no intention of providing all of the necessary services to ensure these children and their families have the resources needed to have healthy productive lives. Case in point—given that so many (if not the overwhelming majority) of women who find themselves with this heartbreaking decision are facing it because of severe complications with the baby, if these politicians were really pro-life, they would be voting to protect and expand Medicaid (usually the main source of healthcare for medically-complicated children who aren’t born to ultra-wealthy parents) & CHIP; they would be ensuring paid medical leave for parents (but especially mothers) as these policies are one of the best ways to lower post-delivery deaths in both mothers & newborns. Additionally, they would be ensuring that all families have meaningful access to affordable high-quality childcare, both so that mothers could be full participants in the workforce and that all children have the same access to the socio-educational benefits of early childcare. These politicians would also be working towards legitimate reforms of the foster care system, the severe holes in the child protective services networks, and tackling the opioid epidemic. Finally, they would stop their continued, morally offensive efforts to gut SNAP. If the politicians who continually insist on telling women how to live their lives by curtailing their reproductive choices, then those same politicians must also be willing to ensure that all of the ancillary services those unborn children will need once they’re born are available to them. If not, then they should own up to their hypocrisy, admit they aren’t actually pro-“life” at all, and more accurately state that they just want to create a “big brother”/nanny-State intent on suppressing women.
