OF COURSE people working during the shutdown should be paid! To not do so is creating slave labor!
Pass the spending bills already previously passed by House and previously passed by Senate. Send them to the President, and if he vetoes, vote bipartisan to over-ride that veto.
Get the government fully open and working again, and give these “essential workers” their back pay as quickly as you can issue checks.
Then propose and pass a rule that states two things:
Government shutdown cannot be done as a political stunt (i.e. can’t be used as a bargaining chip). and
In the unlikely event a budget agreement cannot be reached in a timely, government shall operate at the spending levels of the prior budget until a new budget can be agreed upon and passed.
Slavery is prohibited under the Constitution. It is not legal to mandate “essential” workers to work as de facto slaves.
