It’s been nearly 17 years since GWBush led us into Iraq under false pretenses of WMDs, and bungled the operation with shortsighted policies on the ground there. After Trump recklessly used the Defense Authorizations for Iraq to escalate tensions with Iran, our allies in the Iraqi government understandably want us out.
We should revoke the blanket authorization, and withdraw our troops in a responsible way. We could leave a residual intelligence force there to monitor the situation on the ground, to guard against a resurgence of ISIL, and offer logistical support.
Since our presence makes our allies a target for retribution for Trump’s ill advised attempt to distract the world from his justifiable Impeachment, it is time to leave, and end the 2001 Authorization Use of Military Force. Any future use of military force, other than in a true emergency situation, should be authorized by Congress.
