Schools will remain selective on merit; the University of California system is an excellent example. However, ability to pay will no longer stand in the way of the next Einstein getting their degree in physics. Massive student debt also won't keep the next Pablo Picasso or Renee Fleming from pursuing a career in the fine arts. I'm one of the lucky few who escaped with no student debt; what I'm saving for a down payment on a house, most of my friends a paying monthly in loans. The debt is most crushing for my friends who entered public service: social work, city government, and public advocacy. We need debt reform, and funding reform about how we pay for college going in.
