First, this legislation isn’t about people who don’t believe in unions or don’t want their money to fund unions. Those people aren’t members and don’t currently pay dues, thus this legislation will do nothing for those people. They will continue to be freeloaders and still receive the better pay, benefits, and working conditions negotiated by dues-paying members. Next, it is wrong to allow the employer the ability to arbitrarily stop all dues deductions because of contract negotiations are stalled. That provision of the legislation will only incentivize union busting by stalling contract negotiations. It will be obvious to all employers they only need to stall contract negotiations long enough and they will be able to discontinue all payroll dues deductions, despite the union members’ desire to maintain their membership. This bill is a blatant attempt at union busting and anyone who sponsors or votes in favor if it must be voted out of office.
