This is federal overreach, plain and simple. What’s happened here is that the state government has made an ecologically conservative decision that’s at odds with business interests to which federal congressmen are beholden. Republicans would be crying about “states rights” if this were a federal law concerning abortion or healthcare. Yes, the feds have staked out a claim on some nationalized forests and parks, but this was with the purpose of preventing local governments from strip mining lands with significant natural beauty. What this comes down to is a handout for mining interests at odds with the interests of the people of Minnesota. It is unacceptable and needs to be opposed.
