Herd immunity is the responsible thing to do for those that can not vaccinate. It's about education. In 2000 the CDC declared the Measles eradicated due to an effective vaccination program. Yet, with people opting out and with improper education herd immunity is lapsing. This year we had the largest Measles outbreak in over 24 states. We can no longer say the Measles is eradicated.. and we can not say our children are safe. We need to surveillance and education programs to protect the elderly, the young, the ill, and immunocompromised. Those who can not protect themselves.
