A woman having an abortion after 20 weeks is a woman who has been through serious thought about her pregnancy. She's gone this far, so it's not just about "using abortion as birth control", it's because she's had something happen in her life that will significantly impact her pregnancy. Usually this is news from her doctor (who, unlike most members of Congress, actually has training in medicine) that there are serious medical issues, for her or for the fetus. A woman should not be forced to go through a high risk pregnancy if she doesn't have the support system to back her (maternity leave for recovery, or to make it financially), if there is a real threat to her own health (a living person should take precedence over a potential person), or if there will be significant impediments to the eventual child's quality of life. We should spend our time and resources on programs to give parents of special needs children the support they need, and towards the fight for parental leave, rather than the continued fight to prioritize the unborn over the already living.
