We as a community need to set our own priorities for who is housed in our jails. We don't have enough jail room to respond to ICE detainers. ICE cannot force us to do their job for them. I live in a sanctuary county. Our attorney general carefully vetted our legislation to make sure we would not be violating immigration law by becoming a sanctuary county. I was present at the vote, so I witnessed the proceedings including the public legal discussion. Immigration enforcement is a federal jurisdiction. Local law enforcement is not required to spend budget or offer police time to immigration law enforcement. If someone has committed a crime they will be arrested and charged. The information concerning those people will be turned over to ICE. Most illegal immigrants become illegal through visa violations not by running across the Mexican border like jackrabbits. There are people from many different countries that enter our country often by air travel on valid visas. Their visas run out and they stay anyway. This is a violation like a traffic ticket not a misdemeanor or felony. Local police in our community will not ask about the immigration status of anyone reporting a crime such as rape or domestic violence. Immigrant communities whether properly documented or not face the same kind of crimes everyone else does. We need to be safe. Crimes need to be reported. We should get our grant money.
