I currently work for the forest service as a “forestry technician” (I’m a firefighter) but the last few summers I have averaged about 500 hours of overtime alone for firefighting purposes. I love the job but there are many issues that could be solved with legislative support. See Truckee Capt. Kevin Mecham’s letter for more info. I’d like to see some of my seasonal hours count towards retirement, I’d like hazard pay for prescribed fires (we are still dealing with fire on the ground and smoke in the air, and take the same safety precautions as a wildfire), and I’d like to see a reason to continue working for the feds, when state and contractors offer better pay and benefits.
