Local law enforcement depends on the cooperation of the immigrant community to effectively do its job. "Sanctuary" is a misnomer. No one is hiding undocumented immigrants or subverting law enforcement. If an immigrant commits a local crime, local law enforcement is well within its right to treat him/her like any there law breaker. However, immigration enforcement is federal jurisdiction and should be left as such. If ICE wants someone detained, it should use its own people and funds to carry it out. ICE detainers too often affect people caught up in bad situations as witnesses or victims. How can we expect local law enforcement to do its job effectively if the threat of detention constantly hangs over innocent people? Let local handle local, let federal handle federal. If they don't have the resources to do that, the federal government should reassess its priorities and figure out its own solution.
