I do not support this Bill. The United States should not leave the United Nations, an organization that we founded and enjoy considerable power over as a permanent member of the Security Council.
I understand that the UN has become a corrupt organization with factions that actively work against the interests of the US; however, we cannot seed ground to those who conspire against us on the international stage.
Our activities within the UN are an important part of our foreign policy apparatus, and when combined with diplomacy through our embassies, missions, executive branch outreach activities and military activities have served us well in creating the conditions for the US to thrive over the decades since its founding. I am certain that our diplomacy efforts through the UN have been instrumental in “turning down the heat” and thereby preventing war.
While the UN is corrupt and provides a lifestyle for some folks that we consider incorrigibles, there is good work happening in the UN. Consider the support we have provided through the UN to stem horrendous diseases or prevent tyrants from subjugating others.
I appreciate the efforts that the current administration is making to cutoff the funding of corrupt and outlandish UN activities. I also appreciate the Administration’s efforts to disengage from bad deals like the Paris Accord.
Let’s support the Administration in those efforts and not run away from the international public forum like petulant children. We have the best ideas, but will not win on the international stage unless we remain part of the conversation. We need to stay engaged in the UN.
