This bill obviously has no chance to pass today but the comments are interesting. This would still be far less of a tax on excess wealth than we had in the fifties and sixties when manufacturing and technological industries were growing, being led by industrialists and truly creating wealth and jobs. That doesn’t seem to be as much the case as today when celebrity status (whether entertainment or CEO), legacy, speculation, Wall Street manipulation, influence, and international status seem to be the pathways to extreme wealth in many cases. Maybe that’s a bit naïve and maybe it’s just bigger and we’re exposed to it more today, but it seems like that type of wealth should be taxed and you don’t have to be a “communist” to do it. Real “production” would still be a very private affair and can easily be taxed at a lower rate.
