Mandatory minimums are a plague on our communities and take power away from a judge and jury, arguably the most neutral parties, to make an informed decision instead imposing often unfair sentences upon human beings. What should also be addressed is that the state and city governments should not be doing the federal government's job and sending illegal immigrants to "detention facilities" (please read as prisons) that people are making money off of and that have inhumane conditions. The process illegal immigrants are forced to go through is wrought with issues and even U.S. citizens can sometimes find themselves inside this ill-conceived system and are DEPORTED. Judges are often fired if they do not "work quickly enough" leading to these errors and abuses. Cities should not be forced to assist the federal government in sending people to these cruel places.
