Pakistan is no longer a democracy. The people of Pakistan are suffering a de facto military rule that refuses to address extremist growth and Islamist terrorism both domestically and internationally. The argument that the United States ought to continue supporting Pakistan out of geopolitical necessity is bogus. India would be a far more intelligent country for the US to ally itself with since investment in India will give a place for D.C. to put its feet. In addition to bettering peace in the region, this would economically benefit the US by pushing back China, but that's a different discussion. The point is that Pakistan cannot be designated an ally until it gets control of its military and stops harboring terrorists.
