The Electoral College was conceived during a time when only white land owners could vote, and when the founders felt that the typical eligible voter wasn’t intelligent enough to choose wisely, so the College had “smarter” (read: wealthier) representatives elected to choose for the people who could vote. It was also a system put in place when getting votes was more difficult due to the spread out, disconnected nature of the then U.S.
Now that people of all sexes, races, etc. can vote and now that the whole U.S. is connected, the Electoral College is no longer needed. Whilst it served its purpose in the yesteryears of centuries ago, it is but a relic of the bigoted past and likewise should be shelved.
